The European Prevention and Systematic Screening Initiative to End TB (PASS to End TB) is a critical response to the ongoing challenges posed by tuberculosis (TB) in the WHO European Region to reach goal of eliminating TB by 2030.
PASS to End TB, spearheaded by the WHO Regional Office for Europe and global TB Programs, is part of the joint project “Regional Platform to End TB in Eastern Europe”by WHO in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The aim of this initiative is to accelerate efforts towards eliminating TB by 2030. This initiative is particularly timely, given the new operational context shaped by recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and various humanitarian crises.
The PASS to End TB initiative is focusing on:
- TB Preventive Treatment (TPT): Expanding access to preventive treatment for populations and groups at risk is crucial. By focusing on those at highest risk, the initiative aims to reduce the incidence of active TB cases significantly.
- Infection Prevention and Control Measures: Strengthening these measures is essential to prevent the spread of TB, particularly in communities with high transmission rates, as shown by mathematical models.
- Systematic Screening: Enhancing systematic screening processes ensures early detection and treatment of TB, which is vital for timely TB care and eventually eliminating the disease.
Systematic TB screening and preventive treatment have proven, through mathematical methods, to be the highest impact interventions for slowing the disease.
An initiative crafted in collaboration
The initiative leverages a robust network of support, involving lead TB experts, operational specialists, national focal points, civil society and affected communities. Technical officers in the role of advisors, from various organizations, including KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation‘s Technical Officers, Christiaan Mulder and Jerod Scholten, play an essential role in this initiative. Their expertise and commitment are critical in implementing effective TB prevention and control measures. They contribute to developing and executing strategies that align with the broader goals of the WHO’s Tuberculosis Action Plan for the European Region (2023-2030).
These groups work together to provide quality technical support, improve diagnostic and treatment services, and ensure equitable healthcare access for populations at risk. The involvement of civil society and affected communities further strengthens these efforts, promoting a comprehensive and inclusive approach to ending TB. Joint efforts build on the hope of a world where TB is no longer prevalent.
Together we can End TB.
